Hanks on TV: ‘The Defenders’ are here, at long last
After years of anticipation, “Marvel’s The Defenders” has hit Netflix, and judging by the first episode this critic has seen, it was worth the wait.
Of course, this being an eight-part story – SPOILER ALERT! – we don’t see the four members of the team working together right away.
The premiere episode starts putting all the chess pieces in place, in what at first looks like four separate episodes of the previous Netflix Marvel series: “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist.”
Seeing them all back-to-back makes it clear that the two stronger characters are Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones, but your mileage may vary.
We know that the various cases they’re working on will soon bring them together to face Alexandra, Sigourney Weaver’s mysterious villain… who appears to be working with Matt’s ex, Elektra.
Personally, I missed these characters, and the prospect of seeing them work together is thrilling. Weaver doesn’t disappoint either, with her calm demeanor that hides a psychosis.
With news that Disney is moving its product away from Netflix, one has to wonder what that means for these Marvel series – but I’ll enjoy “The Defenders” and the other shows while they last. Marvel has definitely redefined what’s possible with comics-based TV.
